Linemen might be picked high in NFL Draft
“With the first pick in the 2016 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans select Laremy Tunsil, left tackle, Ole Miss.” When the NFL draft comes on April 28, this very well may be the first name called by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
You may be thinking to yourself, “An offensive lineman? Really?”
It’s hardly out of the question. Offensive linemen are hot commodities when it comes draft time. Just three years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs selected tackle Eric Fisher with the first overall pick. In the same draft, four other linemen were drafted inside the top-10.
The reason linemen are so valuable (especially tackles) is because they are easy to predict. If they are successful at the college level, they will most likely be at the pro level. As long as they have size, speed, power, good hands, and mechanics, they are most likely going pretty high in the draft. Tunsil possesses all of these qualities, which gives him very small bust potential.
This year’s draft should be interesting. The amount of great defensive players is staggering, and it is a relatively weak year to draft a quarterback, with the only big names being Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch.
Goff, a junior this year, is perhaps the most NFL-ready signal caller in the draft. This year he threw for 4,719 yards and 43 touchdowns, which is remarkable at the collegiate level. Lynch threw for 3,778 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Goff may likely find himself in Cleveland as the 2nd overall pick, and the Browns are burning through quarterbacks like wildfire. Since 2008, they have started 16 different quarterbacks. If they were to draft Goff, the hope would be that he ends the long list of disappointments to roll through Cleveland.
As previously stated, there are many very talented defensive players in this draft. From defensive linemen such as Ohio State’s Joey Bosa to cornerbacks like Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves, there really are no shortage of standouts.
Let’s start with the linemen/edge rushers. Bosa is the perhaps the best defensive product in the draft, with a rare combination of speed and raw strength. He only had five sacks this year, but he did have 16 tackles for loss. Ole Miss product Robert Nkemdiche has fallen a bit due to an off the field issue, so Oregon defensive end Deforest Buckner has taken his place. Buckner is a great athlete, and had 10.5 sacks for the Ducks. Both of these guys will likely go top-10.
Shaq Lawson from Clemson is another name who could open some eyes, as he has the ability to tear through blocks like nobody else. Teams such as the Jaguars, Chargers, Cowboys, and Buccaneers would love guys like this.
Alabama middle linebacker Reggie Ragland is a stud. The SEC Defensive Player of the Year can stuff the run game like it’s nobody’s business (97 tackles) and is an every down type of player. Myles Jack is one of the more intriguing guys in the draft, He missed the whole season due to injury but is regarded as a top-10 guy.
He has incredible quickness and ability to cover and blanket virtually any receiver. He does lack some size however. Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith was a top prospect, but he is a risky pick however due to the fact that he tore his MCL and ACL ligaments on Jan. 1 against Ohio State.
Buckeye Darron Lee is an interesting name. He had 66 tackles and 11 for loss this year. The most impressive thing about him is his ability to get down the field to make a play, showing quick and sharp athletic ability as well as decision making.
The Florida Brothers, Vernon Hargreaves, (Florida) and Jalen Ramsey (Florida State) are the two most electrifying cornerbacks in college football. Both will most likely be inside the top-10, to teams like the Cowboys, Jaguars, Ravens, Dolphins, and the Bucs. Both of them have Pro-Bowl-like talent. Hargreaves is better at zone coverage, meaning he shuts down an area of the field where receivers attempt to make plays. Ramsey, who can also play safety, is a better man coverage guy, as he sticks to enemy wideouts like glue, often doing so quite aggressively.
There is no shortage of outstanding talent in this years draft. This is one of the more deeper drafts in recent years, and many teams will leave Chicago happy with the guys they took. Look for this year’s draft class to make a splash in 2016.
