On Oct. 31, Metrojet 9268, an international chartered passenger flight, was on its way from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, in Egypt, to St. Petersburg, Russia, when it supposedly fell off radar about 20 minutes into the flight, according to cnn.com.

A week later, on Nov. 7, BBC America’s Doctor Who broadcasted “The Zygon Inversion,” the eighth episode of the show’s ninth series. In the episode, there was a plane crash that happened early in the episode, in which The Doctor (played by Peter Capaldi) and Osgood (played by Ingrid Oliver) survived a crash from a plane that was shot down.

According to kasterborous.com, a website all about Doctor Who, many people have been drawing parallels to Doctor Who and the crash of Metrojet 9268, because of the two events occurring within a week of each other.

“I feel as if [people] are trying to find a scapegoat for their aggression and frustration. Doctor Who is filmed in Britian months before it is aired in the United States; there’s no way [Doctor Who] could’ve alluded to the plane crash,” Brooke Dykstra, junior, said.

Similarly, last year, in Doctor Who’s eighth series, a small portion was cut out of the series’s third episode, “Robot of Sherwood.”

The cut was implemented because of the ISIS beheading of Steven Sotloff, and Doctor Who wanted to show respect, even though the cut did affect the plot in a negative manner. The airplane crash in “The Zygon Inversion” was important to the plot of the episode, and just because this was broadcasted by BBC America does not mean they were being disrespectful. It was just an unfortunate coincidence that the airplane crash happened a week before the episode was shown.
