Rousey, face of UFC, loses
Mixed martial arts is an art of fighting that many have heard about, but do not know much about. For fans of the sport, however, there is an aspect of brutality and exhilaration that can make someone cringe or scream at the top of their lungs.
Many of those who do not know much about MMA would figure that the most dominant figure in the sport is a man. Those people may be wrong. One of the most dominant figures in the sport is a woman, and her name is Ronda Rousey.
The woman made of all muscle with a judo background has undoubtedly left her mark on the sport, at the highest level of fighting (UFC), she has also made a large mark outside of the octagon (the shape of the ring in MMA), as well.
Rousey was voted in an ESPN poll to be the best female athlete ever. She has been in movies, including the Expendables 3 and Entourage. She is the highest paid fighter in the UFC, more than any male or female.
Her most recent opponent was Holly Holm, whom Rousey fought at UFC 193 on Nov. 15 . Before this fight, Rousey was undefeated in her fights, with a record of 12-0. A majority of those fights were not really fights at all, as Rousey was able to calculate and dominate her opponents with speed and strength. Only one opponent had ever taken her past the first round, and in a fight earlier in February, Rousey defeated Cat Zingano in 14 seconds.
Before big fights, there is a final weigh-in where fans have a final chance to see fighters before they are beating the life out of each other. In the Rousey-Holm weigh-in, there was a heated confrontation when it appeared that Holm had drove her fist into the side of Rousey’s head.
Afterward Rousey stated in an Instagram post, “You’re [Holm] getting your (expletive) kicked tomorrow, and I’m really going to enjoy the beating I give you.”
Rousey stated what many others were perhaps thinking, and the odds were heavily in her favor. The outcome of the fight was very different.
At UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia, Rousey came out attempting to box Holm, who is a boxer, and it was not working. Holm was able to counter all of Rousey’s blows, which seemed to exhaust her. Rousey’s main style of fighting, which consists of grappling opponents and forcing them into submission, was not working either. Holm was being very defensive, finessing Rousey with a combination of punches and stellar footwork.
Holm had done what was unthinkable, she took Rousey out of the first round. Shortly after the start of the second, it appeared that Rousey was out of it, and it was all over when Holm drove her leg hard into Rousey’s neck, knocking her out cold.
She had lost. Ronda Rousey, the fighter who almost all thought was unbeatable, lost to a skinny small-town girl named Holly Holm. The emotional Holm was ecstatic, and overcome with joy, as she had just taken the title of World Bantamweight Champion.
As the celebration began for Holm, the nightmare began for Rousey, who was taken to the hospital, battered and bloody. The argument can be made that Rousey was too cocky, and was not focused on her opponent as much as she probably should have. Whatever, the case, there is a new champion of the UFC world.
