Boys golf: new look this season
This fall, MCHS has many sports that will get students fired up. Boys golf is one of these sports.
The varsity boys’ team has won back-to-back conference championships since the start of the 2013 season, and almost made a run at state last year, missing the tournament by two strokes. Coach Brian Petrovic shared some of his thoughts on what the team will look like this year.
“We are going to look new, just because we had graduated eight seniors last year, almost all of those guys all played, so a lot of these new guys that are gonna be playing for us this year. It’s going to be their first time that they actually see varsity competition, so the word is going to be new for this year. We’ll have to see how it works out,” Petrovic said.
This season the team will go for an impressive feat, winning a 3rd straight conference title. Some players shared what they thought about accomplishing this.
“I can see that we are getting very close as a team and I predict that we will win conference with a perfect regular season record,” Noah Manzo, junior, said.
The boys team is showing plenty of promise so far through the first few weeks of the season, with a few players consistently shooting low scores. However, winning a third-straight conference title does not come without pressure.
“I think there is some pressure, I wouldn’t call it pressure as much as expectations, the kids who have been in the program like Ryan Johnson and Dan Anfield have only been around winning, so of course they feel that it’s apart of their job, as if that’s what they should do. If they put those expectations on themselves yeah I would imagine that there might be some pressure,” Petrovic said.
Players also shared how they felt about the pressure of potentially winning another conference title.
“Yes, there is pressure. Winning a conference title is tough in the first place. Winning it three times in a row will be even tougher, We are all going to have to play well in order to do it,” Anfield, junior, said.
The golf team has the talent to be great, but even some of the best teams still have to work on things in order to compete at a high level.
“I think we have a solid team. Everyone is a good player. We just need to be as consistent as possible,” Brandon Brodzinski, junior, said.
Although winning conference again and having a successful regular season are very prominent accomplishments, the team has a bigger goal that is possible.
“The team goal is to qualify for state,” Jake Bugajski, junior, said.
Petrovic believes that the possibility of this goal is obtainable, but everyone has to be playing proficiently in order for this to happen.
“We have three really good kids this year in Johnson, Anfield, and Brodzinski, who has been playing amazing, so that’s a big boost. Our big thing is we need to look for that fourth good score, so we are gonna need some people to step up and shoot that low score because there will be pressure on those top three guys to play good all the time. I mean, we missed state by 2 strokes last year ,so I definitely think it is realistic,” Petrovic said.
With a team full of juniors and only three seniors, players will have to play great golf consistently, however, the golf team should be outstanding once again, don’t be shocked if they win a third straight conference title, and make a run at state.
“Minooka varsity golf 2k15 is about to get lit,” Manzo said.
The team will play its home matches at Heritage Bluffs in Channahon and play the conference tournament in Blackberry Oaks on Sept. 30.
