College credit options available at GAVC

The GAVC program offers college related courses that are allowed for the juniors and seniors at MCHS. Similar to an AP class, GAVC allows a student to experience a field or job before graduation.

GAVC offers eight beginner classes and eight advanced classes for seniors only who have already taken GAVC their junior year. The students are in a class for two hours each day for five days a week year round. The students are completing 330 hours every year of learning skills for a specific course. Students also receive six credits a year for completing the GAVC program.

“As I begin my junior year, I get to experience and learn the ways of being a nursing assistant through GAVC,” Maddy Engler, junior, said.

GAVC offers Computer Applications (I,II), Criminal Justice (I,II), Fire science (I,II), Health Occupations (I,II), Automotive Technology, Advanced Automotive Technology, Building Trades (I,II), Computer Maintenance Technician (I,II), Welding and Fabrication (I,II), Cosmetology, and Early Childhood (I,IIAC).

One of the most popular classes that everyone takes in GAVC is cosmetology because most of the students take it.

“I was super excited because this is what I want to do with my life. I hope to someday own my own salon,” Chloe Bavilacqua, junior, said.

Cosmetology mainly focuses on preparing the students to successfully pass the state requirements to become a professional cosmetologist. This class will also train them to become a licensed instructor or a teacher at a school. Their training is done at the Franklin Cosmetology Institute. Cosmetology offers six credits each year.

“The teachers are really helpful and great at what they do. It’s hard work, but I’m excited to see where it takes me,” Bavilacqua said.

Another fairly popular class at GAVC is health occupations. Health Occupations teaches students the basic skills in body mechanics, medical asepsis ethics, safety and medical terminology, and personal care of patients. This will also prepare the students for the State Certified Nursing Assistant exam. Health Occupations offers six credits.

“So far, we’ve learned that we get to attend clinicals and we will be learning medical terminology. The amazing thing about taking this class through GAVC is that I will be able to get a head start for college. Not only will I be getting my CNA early, I will be earning seven to five college credit hours. This class is a great way to get a feel for the medical field and I am excited to start my future early,” Engler, said.

Most students in the GAVC program say it is a great way to get a head start on some college classes. The classes offered there will easily get you ahead of tons of people at the age of 16, 17, and 18 year olds.
