Minooka hosted the indoor SPC track championship at the Lewis University field house on 21. Welcoming schools from Plainfield, Oswego, Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Romeoville, this gave Minooka competition to showcase their spirit and athletic talent.
Minooka finished 5th out of the 12 teams.
“I thought we did okay at the Indoor Championship,” boys head varsity track coach Nick Lundin said. “I try not to really overthink the indoor meet because it’s just part of our process. The real test is how much can we improve from then to the outdoor conference meet, battling in a similar situation last season and winning the outdoor championship. That’s the one that matters. It’s up to us as coaches and athletes to figure out how to do that once again.”
Among the performances for Minooka was a thrilling effort in the high jump where sophomore Nehemiah Brown jumped to a second place finish. Battling a field of great competitors from great schools, Brown hit a height that brought him up to the top 2 of the podium with a 6-foot jump in the high jump event.
“My expectations for this meet were really high as with my PR (personal record) hitting 6 feet, I found myself underperforming in past meets and took my time in practice this week and did what needed to be done,” Brown said.
Even more success came in the pole vault, where Minooka celebrated a first place finish with precision from the junior Cooper Bowman claiming the top spot and reinforcing Minooka’s growing reputation in field events. The win kept Minooka at a high point while the meet progressed.
“I feel like I could’ve done a little bit better but I was content with my results because a win is a win,” Bowman said.
