With a new starting lineup, the JV girls basketball team lost against Yorkville 43-21 on Dec. 5.
The girls usual top-scorer, Brooklyn King, was injured in Minooka’s game against Oswego East when she went for a rebound, fell, and hurt her hip.
“Oswego East was playing really rough and she got pushed down by them,” sophomore Audrey Medina said.
With their top scorer out with an injury, the girls went into the game with a whole new lineup.
“I felt like we did good for the situation we were thrown into,” sophomore Aspen Daurer said.
The girls started strong in the first half but fell short later on in the game.
“I think I put in my best effort. I just think we fell short as a team, and could have beat them,” Medina said.
The team as a whole agreed they needed more work with confidence.
Sophomore Brooke Daurer said, “Confidence, my coaches tell me that all the time.”
Coach Bridget McMahon talked about confidence.
“They seem confident in practice, and then when we get out to the game maybe we struggle with that self-confidence, to build it we need to be doing more reps with our shooting. I think if they could make more of our shots their confidence would grow,” McMahon said.
The girls are working hard to improve their game and all agree that they can all work on skills to improve themselves, and in the long term the team.
The main skill the girls, as a team, are working on improving is rebounding plays.
“I think we did pretty good. I think we need to work on some rebounding plays and other things,” Aspen Daurer said.
Another focus for the girls is on offense.
“Our mental game needs to improve, and we need to run our offensive plays correctly,” McMahon said.
The girls are working hard to compete and they have the support to do so. McMahon acknowledged they didn’t their best, but they have the talent to do well and will continue to work on other aspects of the game.
