The Minooka varsity girls golf team matched up against Plainfield South at Heritage Bluffs on Sept. 12. The girls were able to blow past the Cougars, winning 176-212.
Minooka, going into this match, was coming off a loss to Plainfield East. Minooka had won three straight before and looked to get back on track against Plainfield South.
Senior Leona Trevino (5th in SPC), junior Laney Przybyla, and sophomore Avery Selk all led the team to the win each having 43 strokes.
“I would say that our match against Plainfield South was one of our best so far,” Przybyla said. “I was happy with my score and thought my teammates played good as well. We played well as a team overall and our score reflects that.”
Head coach Nick Barello agreed.
“Our girls played well against South – 176 is our second lowest team score of the season. Avery’s 43 was her personal best,” Barello said. “We talk all the time about limiting penalty shots, three putts, and having to chip more than once. If we can eliminate those three things, our scores will end up generally where we’d like them to be.”
Selk said overall it was a good match.
“We were playing on our home course, so we were familiar with the course which was helpful,” Selk said. “I had a good match and so did my teammates. We had a three-way tie for first place between three Minooka girls, and everyone else played well too. We ended up winning by a large amount of strokes.”
The outings from Trevino, Przybyla, and Selk all got them all-conference points as they headed toward the postseason.
Minooka finished 7-5 in the regular season.
At the IHSA 2A Regional at Lasalle-Peru on Oct. 1, the girls finished fifth. Trevino moves on to Sectionals after finishing 11th out of 66 and finishing 5th in SPC rankings.
