Rilyn O’Hern is a sophomore at MCHS. She is a gymnast with a flex schedule. This interview for Nook News has been edited for length and clarity.
Q: How long have you been doing gymnastics?
A: I have been doing gymnastics for 11 years.
Q:What days do you have gymnastics?
A: I have gymnastics Monday, Tuesdays, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Q: What classes and periods do you miss?
A: I miss 4th period both days. I don’t have a resource or a gym period.
Q:What struggles do you have not having resources?
A: I have never been to a lab, so when I need help in a subject I rely on my friends. I have also never had time to finish my homework in school.
Q: Where do you do gymnastics?
A: Phenom in Oswego
Q: If you could, what would you change about your schedule?
A: I wouldn’t change my schedule. I like not having a 4th period.
Q: Tell me about your gymnastics career?
A: I started gymnastics when I was 4. I am a level 10 gymnast, and I used to compete for Aspire for 5 years.
Q: How did you get a flex schedule as a sophomore?
A: My mom had to talk to the counselors, and I had to take homeschool health.
Q: What time do you have to be at gymnastics?
A:I have to be at gymnastics at 3, but I live 45 minutes from the gym so I leave my house at the latest, 2:10.
Q: What time do you usually get home from gymnastics?
A: I usually get home around 7:45-8 p.m.
Q:Have you ever been set back by any challenges? If so, how did you overcome them?
A: I have been set back by many injuries, but I have to keep a positive mindset when I’m not able to do everything. When I can get back to all of my skills I have to be patient and work very hard.
Q: What is your dream car?
A: A Bronco.
