The girls wrestling program has grown quickly in just a few years. So what is it like as a new freshman wrestler?
“The most interesting thing about the girls wrestling team is that you become like a family,” said freshman Daisy Musser. “All the girls get to know each other and it starts to feel like a big family.”
Although there are newer wrestlers, Musser has been into wrestling since she was 10. Her dad and brother both did wrestling so she also decided to join the team. There were some things she expected from wrestling, but she didn’t expect the amount of girls that would have joined.
“I decided to join because the girls and the coaches are really nice, and they push you to your limit,” said freshman Kailey Jefferson. “We just had a tournament (Minooka Thanksgiving Throwdown), and we placed second. It went well overall.”
Jefferson was surprised about how much her teammates have improved in just a couple short weeks. The hardest thing for her was competing against varsity students as a freshman. It was nerve wracking for her because she didn’t have as much experience as the other girls, but it was still fun.
“The freshmen we have this year have a lot of promise,” said head coach Paige Schoolman. “I am seeing girls that want to work hard to learn the craft of wrestling. I am anxious to see how they improve throughout the year. This group will be a solid foundation for the team for years to come.”
The girls have had a great start overall. They have gotten to know one another, are learning more about the sport, and are getting used to their surroundings quickly.
