The beginning of jazz dates all the way back to the 19th century. Jazz originated in New Orleans. Over time, the blending of African music and Caribbean music was joined by marching band instruments, according to jazzobserver.com. Ultimately after playing for so long, it became what we know today as jazz.
The MCHS Jazz Ensemble Band is bringing it to another level this year.
“Looking ahead to the future, I’m excited to push the group to places they haven’t gone before,” Mr. Nick Curatolo, band director, said “Playing more diverse and difficult literature, throwing a bunch of amazing concerts, and maybe even starting competing and forming more small groups.”
The students who are in jazz understand the importance and what it means.
“Jazz bands showcase the artistry, improvisation, and collaboration of talented musicians, creating unique and soulful sounds that touch the hearts of the listeners,” Kaitlyn Thurman, senior, said.
Jazz has a wide variety of instruments. Curatolo wasn’t expecting this shocking surprise.
“One thing I didn’t expect from Jazz Band was the instruments that we ended up adding to the group for the first time (clarinet and vibraphone),” he said, “We had amazing senior talent on those instruments and had to take advantage. Again, it’s the mission letting the individuals shine.”
In all the band is having a great time enjoying expressing themselves in different ways.
“You never get to see music students doing much improvisation and creative playing until the jazz season rolls around,” Curatolo said. “I’m getting a chance to see these students’ personalities in a way I haven’t gotten to yet.”
The students in jazz are excited for the first concert.
“We have top players in our audition group. As an individual you’ll get to experience the joy and energy of live music, support classmates and have a memorable evening filled with performances,” Thurman said. “Plus, you might discover a new favorite artist or who knows, you might just find yourself sitting and playing in one of those seats one day. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in the magic of music.”
Jazz Mob and Jazz Ensemble’s first concert features several holiday songs and is scheduled for Thurs., Dec. 7 in the Performing Arts Center at Central Campus.
