Winning the SPC conference title was one goal the Minooka boys varsity golf team had and accomplished, but next was making it to sectionals.
The regional match stood in their way and was held at Balmoral Woods in New Lenox on Sept. 27. The top three teams in the regional go to sectionals, so Minooka knew that they had to play their best golf.
Junior TJ Quinn led the team with a 73, which was tied for second best individual at the regional.
“I felt like I played pretty well, just played for par and battled to the end,” said Quinn.
Senior Brett Widlowski and junior Luke Purcell both followed with a 79.
“I started out really good and kind of fell off a little throughout the match, but I was able to finish strong to help the team,” Luke Purcell, junior, said.
Michael Kuchar shot a 83, along with Carter Stephenson for fourth best on the team.
The boys fought to the very end and in a dramatic fashion just got 3rd place by one stroke over Sandburg. Minooka hada final score of 314 and Sandburg with a 315.
“We didn’t play our best golf, but we played relatively well. We were able to advance as a team which is an important postseason goal,” head coach Jeff Petrovic said.
The boys were just barely able to move on to advance to the Pekin Sectionals.
