Super Bowl Sunday creates memories to last a lifetime

Kansas City Chiefs star players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce hoist the AFC Championship trophy. The Chiefs emerged victorious, 23-20, thanks to a late 4th quarter field goal by Harrison Butker.

Amidst the potential frigid temperatures and snowy atmosphere of February, football fans in Minooka and around the globe have something to look forward to – the Super Bowl.

The first-ever Super Bowl, known as the “World Championship Game,” took place in 1967 between the NFL’s Green Bay Packers and the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs in Los Angeles, Calif. For 56 years since then, the Super Bowl has been the reason for lifelong memories and annual traditions.

The hometown Bears have been in the Super Bowl twice before, the first of which resulted in a win over the New England Patriots, and the second was a loss against the Indianapolis Colts.

“I was a senior in high school in 1986 when the Bears won the Super Bowl,” Frank Yudzentis, physical education, said. “It’s hard for anything to be more memorable than that.”

The last time the Bears made the big game was 2007, so MCHS students haven’t gotten to experience a Bears Super Bowl like the faculty has. In recent years, the game has seen historic comebacks, legendary plays, and record-setting stat sheets.

“The best Super Bowl was the one when Tom Brady came back from down 28-3 against the Falcons,” junior Kyle Koerner said. “I always like to see a team come from behind and win.”

Although Brady has been a prominent Super Bowl figure, as he has hoisted the Lombardi trophy an NFL-record seven times, not every Minooka student is a fan of his.

“My favorite Super Bowl was the year David Tyree made the helmet catch,” senior Carter Guessner said. “Tom Brady was sorry and the Patriots got sent home packing.”

This year’s big game is the 57th installment of the Super Bowl. It will be taking place on Feb. 12th in Glendale, Ariz. The  No. 1-seeded Chiefs will represent the AFC and the No. 1-seeded Philadelphia Eagles will represent the NFC. Rihanna will headline the newly-sponsored Apple Music Halftime Show.

“I honestly prefer the halftime show over the game,” junior Sam Reiter said. “I’m looking forward to Rihanna’s performance.”

Both teams’ quarterbacks, Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Philly’s Jalen Hurts, are MVP frontrunners and love to put points on the board. This could allow for a high-scoring game and competitive atmosphere that could result in an all-time great game.

“I’m thinking there’s going to be lots of scoring,” Yudzentis said. “I got the Chiefs winning this one.”
