Girls cross country scores perfectly against West Aurora

Freshman Cassie Fuhrman and sophomore Ella McColllom race against Oswego East on Aug. 29.

The Minooka varsity girls cross country dominated West Aurora on Sept. 19.  The girls won with a perfect score of 15-50.

¨The goal this year has been ‘Get better at getting better,’ which I think the girls have done an amazing job at,¨ head coach Kevin Gummerson said.

First place was sophomore Gabby Kics, who ran a time of 19:01.  The Minooka girls all finished in the top 7.

Freshman Cassie Fuhrman ran a well-rounded race, placing second and posting a course personal record for herself of a 19:12.

¨The race last saturday was one of the best ones I’ve had all season.  The formation pushed me to keep up with everyone, and I think that that was the real game changer for me,¨ Fuhrman said.

Gummerson had implented a running formation strategy called the arrow.

“Sophmore Ella McCollom was the pace setter of the arrow because she is very good at keeping pace in practice — only being a tenth off the time we want her to run,” Gummerson said. “Junior Jocyln Host and freshman Cassie Fuhrman were the wings, whose goals were to guide the team but also keep intruders away that tried to breakin into the arrow.  Sophomore Gabby Kics and junior Kathryn Cichon were the sweepers whose main job was to keep everyone running the pace and make sure no one gets left behind.”

McCollom finished third with a time of 19:32, Host finished fourth with a time of 19:38, and to round out the top five, Cichon finished fifth with a time of 19:51.
