Summer movies give us hope

Wonder Woman 1984 is set to come out Aug. 14.

With everything happening in the world right now, it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of our current situation. It’s even easier to look past the things that once brought us all joy, and just focus on the negatives. Though it’s not a cure for the inevitable sadness most of us are feeling, something that might help get you through the rest of your quarantine is a few movies that you can go see once you no longer have to look at the four walls of your bedroom all day.

Mulan, July 24 (PG-13)

With an initial release of March 27, Mulan has been highly anticipated since the announcement in late 2018. Recently, Disney decided to push the release date to the end of July amid coronavirus fears. For some that news was a disappointment, many being young adults that grew up watching the original from 1998. For others, though, this later release does not seem to be much of a problem, as some were not predicting a movie that would live up to their childhood expectations.

Directed by Niki Caro, this Disney remake follows the Emperor of China’s decision to force one person per family to serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country. A young woman (Liu Yifei) trying to save her father from serving in the Army disguises herself and joins the battle herself. The film shows her epic journey to a warrior honored by her nation.

Wonder Woman 1984, Aug. 14 (R)

Not much is known about this sequel directed by Patty Jenkins, but from the title, it obviously takes place around 70 years after the previous film. In the first trailer that dropped in December 2019, it was revealed that Diana Prince’s (Gal Gadot) love interest (Chris Pine) has somehow been resurrected after dying in the first film. The two main villains in the film are Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), Prince’s friend who turns evil, and Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), a businessman who promises to grant all of consumer’s wishes. Prince also must figure out what the catch of Steve Trevor’s sudden return is.

A Quiet Place Part II, Sept. 4 (R)

In the first film, written and directed by John Krasinski, we met the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds) that had to live in complete silence. Much of the first half of the film is spent showing how the family lives and acts like a normal family while keeping quiet. It isn’t until about halfway through do audiences finally get a glimpse at why they could not make any noise: an alien-like creature that is attracted to sound.

While most of the family survived until the end of the film, there are still many questions that are left unanswered such as how these monsters first arrived and who else is still alive. From the trailer released in December 2019, it seems like some of the fan’s questions will be answered. In the second film, the Abbott family will be leaving the safety of their farm and experiencing the outside world once again, this time without Krasinski’s character, Lee, who sacrificed himself at the end of the first film to save his family. Throughout their journey, there will likely be flashbacks to Lee still being alive as well as life before the creatures first attacked. Along the way, the Abbots will meet other survivors (Cillian Murphy, Djimon Hounsou) that may or may not be helpful in their survival.
