E. Coli affects Chipotle customers
“Burrito, white rice, no beans, steak, sour cream, cheese, and guacamole.”
Chipotle customers often know their favorite dine in delight by heart, but lately customers haven’t been in a rush to order. Chipotle has been caught in sea of health problems and now is undergoing many investigations.
Over 350 people have gotten severe stomach sickness after eating at a Chipotle chain this year in a total of 12 different states, even including Illinois. One of the most unnerving facts about this is that the source of the problem unknown even though the restaurant only uses 64 ingredients. All information comes from Food Safety News.
The first string of problems started in Seattle in the month of July where five customers developed E. Coli. E coli causes uncontrollable vomiting, diarrhea, and in some cases bloody diarrhea. Many cases led people to people being hospitalized. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, although all food is being inspected.
The next set of outbreaks happened in Simi Valley, California in August. Over 264 costumers got sick from this location, this the most to get sick out of all the cases nationality.Their sickness came from a norovirus, which could come from a sick employee. A noroviruscan give you diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting problems. The source is still considered unknown.
Around the same time in Minnesota, another outbreak happened to 22 of the chains. This time over 52 people were sickened by the food. Somenla was the reason for this outbreak, and this time Minnesota health officials were able to link this to their tomatoes. Inspectors still can’t find what Chipotle farm the bad batch of tomatoes came from. Salmonella can cause fever like symptoms, and many digestive issues because the bacteria forms in the intestines. According to CNN, nine people were hospitalized from this case.
The next case is a little more complex. Beginning on Oct. 19, Chipotles in California, Illinois, Maryland, Maine, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington, a total of 52 people, got a strand of E coli within a week after eating at the food chain. Where the E coli came from once again was unknown.
The last case to happen was in December, where 136 costumers got sick after eating Chipotle.Surprisingly,it was from having a norovirus. Once again, no one can could find the source of the problem.
“It does somewhat affect if I’m going to eat there or not because a part of me is always questioning if I’ll get sick the next time I eat there” Holly Clayton, freshman, said.
All of these complications have started a federal investigation. According to Business Insider, “The investigation is being conducted by the US attorney’s office for the Central District of California and the US Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations.”
A letter from Chipotle to its customers states that they will handle the outbreaks by packaging and handling their food differently. For now on all tomatoes, lettuce, and other ingredients will be precut ingredients in a chosen Chipotle farm and have them tested for problems instead of employees cutting them up on spot. Chipotle also states they will also crack down on employee training.
Also, conspiracy theories have started about the events. Conspiracists believe that possibly a company rival has planted E Coli in Chipotle’s food but that seems highly unlikely.
“I mean I think it would take a lot of effort to locate all of the Chipotle farms and put E.Coli on all the food that sounds like it might not be true. Considering Chipotle is such a large corporation they probably have some security at their farms so I feel like it might have been not true. I feel like it could’ve just been the farm itself,” Talia Belia, junior, said.
Chipotle’s stock has already gone down 20 percent. Not to mention sales at the end of 2015 dropped up to 11 percent at some locations.
“I think they will be able to make a come back because they seem to be fixing the problems okay,” Thomas Rodely, junior, said. “Plus there food is pretty good so I’m sure with some time people will come back.”
All Chipotle restaurants will be closed February 8 for health meetings.
